Where is God?

Where is God?

Do you ever feel like your life is spinning out of control? Does it scare you? Do you wonder, “Where is God?” when these things are happening around you and even to you?

Just because things seem out of control, does not mean they are out of God’s control. Often, He uses tough incidents and events to make us more like Jesus, doesn’t He? What does Psalm 139:1-6 say about where He is?

Psalm 139:1-6 ESV (esp Verses 5 and 6)

1O LORD, You have searched me and known me!

2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You discern my thoughts from afar.

3You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.

4Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.

5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay Your hand upon me.

6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, it is high; I cannot attain it.”

We will talk through Verses 5 and 6 today but I wanted to keep them with Verses 1-4 so that we can see the bigger picture at this point.

Let’s talk through Verse 5:

“You hem me in…”

When I need my 2-year-old granddaughter to stay out of a certain area to keep her safe, I will block the way to danger and keep her in a safe area. I have hemmed her in and away from danger.

To “hem me in” is to keep me in a certain area – even to surround me.

“…behind and before…”

He does surround us. He is all around us.

“…and You lay Your hand upon me.”

Are you aware of God’s hand upon you? He is not far away. He is so close that He has His hand on us – right where I am and right where you are. Our wonderful God is omnipresent (everywhere all at once).

Isn’t that just beautiful? So, when I, His child, feel alone He is with me, even touching me. And when you, as His child, feel alone He is with you, even touching you.

We may not always feel His presence and that is when we must take possession of this knowledge by faith because He says He is with us many times in His Word.

What an amazing and wonderful God He is!

Then to Verse 6:

“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.”

Now, scroll back up and read the first 6 verses of Psalm 139 again and consider this “knowledge” that David, the Psalmist, is talking about.

The pure beauty and the comfort in knowing that God knows us, as His children, and that He is right with us all the time is a life-changing thing to think about. David says here that he cannot attain it.

I guess this is where I would say, “I can’t wrap my mind around it.” It is just really, really huge.

One thing is for sure, if David, the man after God’s own heart, could not attain it, then it is awfully high to attain. If I think I have a solid hold on it, I am probably not thinking about it deeply enough.

Each verse (1-6) takes on a different part of who we are as individuals. Each verse also tells us more about God and how He deals with His children.

Thank You, Lord, for Your beautiful Word!!

Things to Ponder:

  • Are you aware of God’s close presence or do you need to take possession of that knowledge by faith? Ask God to increase your faith and remember that Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes by hearing His message, the Word of God, so be in His Word.
  • Are there things in your life now that seem to be out of control? Take hold of the truth that, if you are His child, He is with you and has His hand on you.
  • If you aren’t His child – if you don’t know Jesus as Savior and Lord – if you have not surrendered control of your life to Him, I would love to talk with you! Leave a comment and I will keep it private!
