Where do you live?
Last week, I just posted John 15:1-11 one day. Jesus was talking about abiding in the Vine – and we know that He is our beautiful Vine. Let’s dig into that passage deeper this week.
Where do you live?
John 15:5-11 ESV (esp 5-7)
5“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in Me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples. 9As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you. Abide in My love. 10If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
Over the past few months, I have hit darker spots when I felt lost. Not like I had lost my salvation, but like my emotional equilibrium was off and I could not decide which way was up. That probably sounds crazy. It feels pretty crazy too. But, in those times, I still had the fact of God’s love in my heart. I knew that He had me – abiding in the Vine even through those really disorienting times. This is definitely a time of pruning for me.
Verses 5 and 6 seem to just be repeating Verses 1-4 but in reality, Jesus is deepening and tightening them up.
Let’s look at Verse 5:
5“I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
As Christians, we hear a lot about “fruit”. I am sure you know this fruit is produced in our lives as God works through us and helps us to be more and more like Jesus. As we grow in our Christian life, God changes how we see things and how we do things. When we learn about what pleases God, we want to do those things and not do the things that do not please Him.
The more we live focused on Him and walking with Him the more of this “fruit” the Holy Spirit will produce in us. Good fruit is a good thing!
Now to Verse 6:
6″If anyone does not abide in Me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown in the fire, and burned.”
Just like we learned in seventh-grade life science if you disconnect a branch from its plant it will wither and die. That is just a scientific fact.
God made us and breathed life into us. We are His branches, but those who come to know Christ and grow in Him are the ones that will be pruned and prepared to produce good fruit. Pruning hurts sometimes but it is necessary for us to produce good fruit. As we grow and God changes us He is pruning us.
However, the branches that do not live connected to the Vine will not get the nourishment they need and will wither and die.
I know you want to grow and produce good fruit and so do I! So we must live in Him. Just like that branch in nature, our life-blood flows through the Vine and nurtures us and makes us grow.
We will continue in this passage next time!
Things to Ponder:
- Living in Christ, focused on Him and walking closely, we can produce fruit by the power of the Holy Spirit that will glorify the Father.
- If we are not abiding in Him, we will wither and eventually die spiritually. We have starved ourselves of the life-blood and nutrients He can give us to live and flourish.
- Where do you live (abide)?
