Well-Equipped

Well-Equipped

Are you well-equipped to deal with whatever comes your way today? Did you know that God has a plan laid out for us so that we can live our lives for His glory which actually includes being well-equipped to deal with the obstacles and issues the enemy hits us with? As Christians, we have the great gift of the Holy Spirit coming to live in our hearts to help us every day. He has given us what we need, according to 2 Peter 1, for life and godliness. So we can glorify Him! Today, we are going to be talking about part of that equation. And what a wonderful equation it is!!!

Today’s Passage

We are continuing our closer look at the full armor of God today. I don’t know about you, but I have thought quite a bit about the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Righteousness, and the Shoes of Readiness of the Gospel of Peace today. We are well-equipped, and for so much more than most of us realize or practice.

Ephesians 6:16-17

16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Powerful and Effective

The Armor of God is powerful because He gave it to us to use and the Holy Spirit helps us use it effectively. Each piece has its own specific function. It is really quite an amazing gift and not just words on the page of some book, right?

Let’s look at Verse 16:

“In addtition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

The Shield

The Roman soldier had a shield that he could actually shield his whole body behind. This shield was made of 3 layers of wood glued together, covered with a layer of canvas then covered with leather.

A very interesting thing about the Roman shield called a “scutum” was that the soldiers could lock their shields together and form a solid formation of shields.

The Shield of Faith

God gave us faith to believe in Christ for our salvation. This faith grows as we get to know God better through His Word and as we see His faithfulness to what and who He says He is. We can hide behind this faith and as our enemy, the devil shoots flaming arrows and whatever else at us and we will be safe. We hold onto Faith – the Shield of Faith.

Think now about that interlocking capability of the Roman shields. We as believers can come together with our Shields of Faith and lock them together, stand firm and strengthen each other.

It is pretty clear why one of the things the enemy hammers at the most is our faith, isn’t it? When we are doubting God we are so much more vulnerable.

Know God and His Word. Seek Him and let Him build your faith so that you can let your faith lead the way – Take up the Shield of Faith.

To Verse 17:

“Take the helmet of salvation…”

The Helmet

The soldier’s helmet is obviously there to protect the head, right? That’s just a no-brainer!!

The Helmet of Salvation

The Helmet of Salvation is also to protect the brain/the mind.  As Christians, we must understand Biblical salvation. Then, we can know without a doubt that we are saved. This is absolutely necessary for us to stand confidently in battle. To doubt my salvation during a heated battle with the enemy would be spiritually paralyzing.

There again he hammers at our faith from every angle he can.

Understand Biblical salvation so you can know you are saved – Put on the Helmet of Salvation.

Finishing up Verse 17:

“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

The Sword

Here again, we pretty much know what a sword is for. Am I right?

The Sword of the Spirit – God’s Word

Think about it: The sword is the only offensive piece of the Full Armor of God. It is the piece that can make the enemy “back up”. However, the only way we will make him back up is as the Holy Spirit helps us wield this Sword well. Remember, He is the one who will help us recall what we have heard from God’s Word. He is the one who helps us understand and apply it to our lives.

The Enemy Lies! All Lies!!

The enemy will come at us with lies such as “You are not saved. Saved people don’t think like that!” or “You cannot go back and ask for forgiveness AGAIN for that same old sin. He doesn’t want you in His sight.” Another one he uses is: “That sin is just too bad. You cannot get forgiven for that one. You are a lost cause.” These are lies!!!

What about you? What lies has he been telling you?

I encourage you to go to the Scripture and find a verse to refute each lie. If you do not know how, then leave me a comment and I will be happy to help you. Comments are kept private until I post them so it will not be seen.

Take up God’s Word and use it to refute Satan’s lies – Take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

I am so thankful for each one of you! May God richly bless you as you seek Him!

Let’s Pray:

Lord, I thank You for this armor that You have given us. Please help us to use it for Your glory!  Help us to glorify You with everything we do. Make us what You want us to be. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
