Thankful in the Minute by Minute
I am going to make a confession to you. I do not always make my bed. Which camp do you fall into on the issue of daily bed making? Some people think it is a moral flaw to not make your bed every single day, some think it is an effort of futility because you are going to just unmake it again in approximately 16 hours, and others are completely apathetic to the entire concept (they don’t care one way or the other).
I like for my bed to be made but I probably make it up about half the time. I know… some of you now think I am a terrible person. Sorry to disappoint.
This week, as I have pondered being thankful and the lack of thankfulness in my minute by minute life, I have thought about it from different angles. I guess you can say that today’s devotional comes from a stewardship angle.
1 Peter 4:10-11 ESV
“10As each has received a gift, use it and to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies – in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To Him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen”
Gifts to Use
Yesterday, as I arose and decided whether or not I was going to make my bed, I was reminded that I am a steward of the blessings God has given me. In my opinion, being a good steward of those blessings is a way of practicing, not only obedience but also thankfulness. I am not saying that making a bed is right or wrong. It is pretty irrelevant, I think. My point is that when we are given a gift by God we are responsible for what we do with it, aren’t we?
For His Glory
I have dear friends who are incredibly gifted in different areas. Obviously, God gives different people different gifts for different reasons but also for the same reason – to bring Him glory. Visual arts, music, writing, helping others, performing arts, praying behind the scene, hospitality and so on, are all gifts to be used for the same reason, right?
Isn’t it thrilling to know that God has given you gifts – probably the thing or things you are most passionate about and love to do – for His glory! Isn’t it amazing to wake up each day with purpose! Have you ever had a time in your life when you did not feel like you had a purpose? I have and it was not a good time. I am very thankful for purpose – how about you?
I think this is where stewardship in an attitude of thankfulness meets a fulfilling life.
I have a friend who is a server and she just exhausts me with all her energy. She volunteers to do things most people would not do for good money and she never has to look for a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Her life has purpose, and her purpose is to glorify God with the gift He has given her to serve and love on other people. Now don’t get me wrong, at the end of the day this lady is tired!! But God gives her the energy to do what He has called her to and gifted her for. Her life is full and beautiful and people see Jesus in her!
Things to Ponder:
- What is the main gift that God has given you? Are you using it for His glory?
- Have you shelved the gift for now? Isn’t it time to get it back out and use it?
- Look back on this week so far. Where has God given you joy in using the gift He has given you (for His glory)?
- Are you a good steward the gifts God has given you? Are you thankful for them?
