What do you do with Stinkin’ Thinkin’?
When I was still quite young in my walk with the Lord, I was sharing with my pastor’s wife, Linda, one day that I very bothered about something and could not get this thing off my mind. I do not even remember what it was now that was bothering me but I remember what she said. She said, “Yes, I call that “Stinkin’ thinkin’.” That is exactly what we will be dealing with for the next couple of days.
How does Stinkin’ Thinkin’ affect your life?
Our mind is Mission Control, right? That means what is going on in there is going on all over our bodies and our lives. So, stinkin’ thinkin’ leads to stinkin’ days, stinkin’ weeks, stinkin’ months, and stinkin’ years. Ugh! We have to do something! Right?
We are continuing on in Philippians 4 today. As you read our Bible text, you will see that it definitely points back to the verses before it. Nothing ever stands alone in God’s Word, does it? It always rests on the context around it.
Philippians 4:8-9 ESV
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me – practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Wrong Thoughts Rob Us of Peace
We are still dealing with thoughts that rob us of our peace along with other things. We will see over the next few days how Paul’s teaching from Verses 4-7 are simply getting richer and deeper in God’s truth as we look at Verses 8 and 9.
How do our thoughts affect our obedience to God?
As we look closely at Verse 8 next time, we will see that not only does this verse teach us more on our thought life but also how we are to grow in obedience. We will glorify God with our lives as we grow in His truth and obedience to Him.
God Calls Us to Holiness
God uses Paul here to call us to a higher level of living, a life more focused on God, and that focus is greatly affected by our thinking. He calls us to excellence as Christ Followers. As we look at Verse 9 in the Aug 10th post, we will talk about living at that higher level.
Glory and Happiness
It may sound like we cannot glorify God and be happy at the same time. However, that is the farthest thing from the truth! The richest life you will ever live is the life that glorifies God. Look at Paul. He had an amazingly rich life!
Read It Again
This is shorter than a normal post but I want to get into the verses in more detail tomorrow and the next time. But, today, go back and read Verses 8 and 9 again. Really think about what Paul is saying to us and how we can apply this verse to our lives.
We will dig in tomorrow! Have an amazing day!!
Lord, I do thank You for Your glorious Word. I thank You that You are helping us to know You better. I thank You for bringing us to You. Please help us to be what You want us to be and help us to understand and apply Your Word to our daily lives. Be glorified in us. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
