And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and any one of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and any one of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go. So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “
Every onewho laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every onewho kneels down to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
God is very clear, isn’t he? He says there are too many and He trims more of the soldiers away. So now 300 men are to conquer this enormous Midian army.
Whoever says the Bible is boring has not read this story, huh? What happens next?? I can hardly wait! Yes, we are probably all familiar with this story but it is such a great reminder of how awesome our God is!
His Ways Are Definitely Higher
Now, under normal circumstances, Gideon – me – you would probably think that this battle plan made no sense at all. God often does not make sense to us and He does not have to. He’s God, right?
How often have you known that God was leading you to do something that made no earthly sense at all? And then, when you followed through with what He had led you to do, you knew fully, that He had been leading you. Then it all made perfect sense or not, but you knew He had led you to do it.
Since God often does not make sense to us, we need to know Him and His character well enough to recognize when He leads us to do something.
You know how, don’t you! We must spend time in God’s Word to know Him and we must study Him. We will never know or understand Him fully but we can know Him well enough to know His voice. He has given us a picture of Himself in His Word so that we can get to know Him better.
We are complicated! The people that are in my life are only as complex as I am. So often, I struggle to understand myself. In counseling over the last few months, I have learned so much about myself that I did not know. Understanding other people is even more difficult.
Crazy! Not me, but how complex we people are – well, maybe me too… a little. 🙂
As complex as we are, how much more complex is God – this God of the Bible; this Maker of All; this Creator of the Universe. We will not understand Him completely but we can always know Him better than we do now. We will never run out of things to learn about God. There is always more to learn! Isn’t that exciting!!
Things to Ponder:
- If I was Gideon, I would be wondering about now how in the world God was going to pull this off. Are there things in your life now that you know are only going to go well if God takes care of them?
- Are you spending enough time in God’s Word every day to be consistently growing in your knowledge of Him? I know I need to be spending significant time with Him each day.
- May we all have a great hunger to know Him better and better every day.
