When you were a kid did you want to be a movie star? I did. It is really comical now. I did know at an early age, of course, that it was not to be because I was not born with California blonde hair and Caribbean blue eyes.
Now, I look at how famous people have to live and I know that was not the life for me. They have to be almost reclusive just to have peace and quiet. I like my life of anonymity.
We are about to talk about being a different kind of star.
Today, we continue studying in Philippians 2. Last time, we talked about how God is always working on us and making us more like Jesus. This passage is definitely along that same vein, of being more like Jesus.
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life – in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.
Let’s look at Verse 14:
“Do everything without complaining or arguing…”
Have you ever thought about the fact that complaining and arguing are not pleasing to God? Our pastor, Danny, said a while back that there is no room, at all, for complaining in a Christian’s life.
If we are thinking about the things we are supposed to be thinking about, this will not be nearly as big a problem for us.
Now onto Verse 15:
“…so that you become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation…
So our growth in Christ is showing in our lives – that we are children of God!
Last part of Verse 15:
“…in which you shine like stars in the universe…”
When we are living as children of God, we will be a light in a dark place. God’s light will shine through us and people will see Him in us!
And Verse 16:
“…as you hold out the word of life…”
We hold the truth of God – the good news of Jesus Christ and His work for our salvation! We do not have to stuff it down people’s throats. When we simply live it and take opportunities to share when God opens the door, God by the power of the Holy Spirit will show them the way. If we have already destroyed our witness by being argumentative and complaining all the time, the people around us are likely to be unimpressed with anything we have to say about God and His great love for us. Sad but true.
Finishing out Verse 16:
“…in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.”
There again, Paul, seeing their growth and maturity in Christ was able to have the satisfaction that they were truly walking with the Lord. These things were so very encouraging to him.
As we go into our day, let us not necessarily walk in the habits we have always walked in. I pray that we will peel off another layer of that old man (before we became Christians) and allow Jesus to shine through a little brighter today!
Lord, I thank You so much for Your beautiful Word. Please help us to apply it to our lives and help us to be what You want us to be. Help us to glorify You in all we do. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
