Real Rest

What is Real Rest?

We live in a stressed out tired society, don’t we? There just are not enough hours in the day to do all we need to do on a daily basis. From society’s perspective, there really is not enough of anything: Not enough time, money, energy, fun, relaxation… So at the end of the day when it is time to rest, do we rest?

When you sleep, do you really rest? Do you feel like a new person after a full night’s sleep? I do not usually. I sleep really hard and I never seem to get enough. Of course, when I go to bed at 2 am knowing I have to rise at 7 am, I guess I am kind of setting myself up for a rough morning. Haha. But seriously, when you get enough sleep do you feel like you have gotten real rest – spiritual, mental, emotional and physical rest.

To achieve real rest, I think we have to be able to lay all our burdens down.

Our passage for today:

Psalm 91:1-2 NIV

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Oh, this is one of my most favorite passages of scripture. I feel more peaceful just reading it.

Today we are going to talk about Verse 1 and next time we will get into Verse 2.

Let’s Look at Verse 1:

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Home Sweet Home

When I get home from work, I habitually put everything in my hands on the end of the dining room table and in that end chair. It is a terrible habit and it annoys me but I still do it. I have this thing for flat surfaces. Do you have a similar habit?

“He who dwells…”

“He” is me and you as believers.

I live in my house, right? I dwell there and when I come home I physically unburden myself of all that stuff from the day.

We can absolutely do the same thing dwelling with God. We can completely unburden ourselves of all that we are dragging around with us – spiritually, mentally and emotionally. What a wonderful thing!!

A Safe Place

“…in the shelter of the Most High…”

My home is my “safe” place. I know that some homes are safer than others and I pray for each one whose home is not really a safe place. May God intervene on your behalf!! Please contact me if I can do anything at all to help you!!

Our home with the Most High God is a real safe place. For believers, we sometimes think of dwelling with God as a thing we will do after this physical life is over when we get to heaven. But, my friends, this is talking about now! Right now!! He wants us to live out this life in His shelter.

Ah, Rest!

“…will rest…”

Ah, there it is. We will rest! When we are able to unburden ourselves in His shelter, we can get that real rest that we so desperately need. Rest is the unburdened peace of not striving or struggling with anything. That is my definition.

Knowing that we are being taken care of, in the greatest sense of the word, should lend itself to rest for us. He will take care of us according to His will. His care may not meet all our criteria but His will is always best for us.

The Shelter of Shadow

“…in the shadow of the Almighty.”

As I look outside right now and the sun is nearly at its highest point in the Maine sky. There is very little shadow cast by the house now, so you have to get very close to the house to take shelter from the sun’s rays.

The closer we stay to our Almighty God, the more shadow and shelter we will be in. So we need to get close and stay close to Him.

So How Can We Apply Verse 1?

We are His. We are welcome in His presence because, as believers, Jesus Christ is our Savior and Lord. But, the more we seek Him, the more we love Him, and the better we know Him the more we will be able to dwell closely with Him, in His very shadow. We can truly rest in His shadow – spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically.

Let’s Pray:

Thank You so much, Lord, for this beautiful passage. I ask You now that You please wrap us in Your shadow. Help us to rest in Your wonderful peaceful shadow. May all we do be to glorify You and may we be ever growing in our knowledge of You and relationship with You. Please be glorified, today, in us. Fulfill all Your plans in us as we seek You! In the Name of Jesus Christ our wonderful Savior, I pray. Amen.
