Prayer in Battle

One More Very Important Item

We have talked all week about the Full Armor of God. Today we are finishing up this series with the last but definitely not least item of our equipment for battle. This item is prayer. Paul did not use a piece of Roman armor to connect prayer with, but it is actually so very important. It may seem to be an afterthought, but as you read today, what do you think?

Ephesians 6:18 of Verses 10-18 NIV

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

The Holy Spirit’s Role

We have talked this week about how vital the Holy Spirit’s role is in the battles we fight. He is absolutely necessary because He empowers us to use every piece of armor effectively. If He is not involved we will lose the battle. So, how important is prayer in battle?

Let’s look at Verse 18:

Pray

“And pray in the Spirit…”

The Holy Spirit even helps us to pray! We need Him every second of every single day!

All Occasions

“…on all occasions…”

All occasions… anytime… all the time… We need to stay in an attitude of prayer – in other letters, Paul says “pray continually”.  We need to always keep in mind that God is with us and talk to Him all day long.

Sometimes, when I am in public I’ll be talking to God and realize I am talking out loud. I look around to see if anyone saw me. True confession, I have been caught talking to no one but myself! How embarrassing! Nah, I have always been a little crazy. Sometimes I just forget and let it show.

All Kinds of Prayers and Requests

“…with all kinds of prayers and requests.”

We can pray so many different ways, can’t we?

Prayers…

  • thanking God for providing for our needs
  • praising Him for all He is
  • thanking Him for strength
  • crying out for help
  • for Him to intervene in someone else’s life
  • rejoicing in His goodness
  • that we will hear His voice as He leads us
  • and on and on…

We always have things to pray about, especially when we are facing a battle. God is always faithful to hear His children.

And Keep Praying

“With this in mind, be alert and always keep praying for all the saints.”

Many times in God’s Word we are called to pray for our fellow believers. We are all in need of being lifted up in prayer. So let’s make a habit of lifting each other up!

Prayer is our line of communication with God. That line of communication must be open during battles, so we know what we are to do – Pray.

Now we are going to do a quick recap of the Full Armor of God:

  1. We must hold to the Truth and wrap it around us. Put on the Belt of Truth.

  2. Also, we must know that we are covered in the righteousness of Christ and we can live righteous lives as believers because His Spirit lives in us. Put on the Breastplate of Righteousness.

  3. We can know that we now have peace with God because of what Jesus did and we can walk confidently in Him! Put on the Shoes of Readiness of the Gospel of Peace.

  4. Know God and His Word. Seek Him and let Him build your faith so that you can let your faith lead the way – Take up the Shield of Faith.

  5. Understand Biblical salvation so you can know you are saved – Put on the Helmet of Salvation.

  6. Take up God’s Word and use it to refute Satan’s lies with the help of the Holy Spirit – Take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  7. Though he did not list it as a piece of the armor, Paul certainly saw it as very important. Prayer is our line of communication with God. That line of communication must be open during battles, so we know what we are to do – Pray.

God loves you and me so much! He says that we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ! My prayer is that we walk in that truth today!
