Imagine… knowing you would never fall in your Christian life. I know on our best days we can all feel pretty good about where we are in our walk with Christ. Oops! Would that be a prideful statement? Yep!
So, what are you and I to do, to never fall?
2 Peter 1:10-11
“Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will recieve a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
A Beautiful Culmination
I am sure you have heard this – “What is the therefore there for?” I’ll tell you anyway. It indicates that what has been said is being culminated here. In this text, therefore ties verses 3-11 into a neat power-packed package.
“…We have been given…”
“…everything for life and godliness…”
“…through our knowledge of Him…”
“…very great and precious promises…”
“…participate in the divine nature…”
“…make every effort to add to your faith goodness, and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.”
“…possess these qualities in increasing measure…”
“…not to be ineffective or unproductive…”
“…knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ…”
“…without them… nearsighted and blind…”
“…he has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.”
What a picture Peter has painted for us, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
“…my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure.”
Make Your Calling and Election Sure
For clarity, when God calls us and elects us, He works in our hearts and we respond to His working. We know we are different than we were before, that He has called us, elected us. We make that calling and election sure as we act on what God is doing in our hearts and lives. A life of obedience is what He calls us to – a life obsessed with Him and His glory.
Finding the Key
“For if you do these things you will never fall… “
That is the key that unlocks the door to never falling! To never fall! One translation says stumble. Wow!
We see Christians, entirely too often, fall into sin in a very public way. None of us are above this and the day we think we are is the day we step toward the stumbling block. Go back to therefore. All the components in the passage from verse 3 to verse 9 are the elements that go into never falling. Now, that is life in Christ to the full on earth,
“…and will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
and this is our reward in heaven! As undeserving as we are Christ made a way for us through His inconceivable sacrifice. We are human and we are still not going to do this perfectly, no more than we keep the Ten Commandments perfectly, but this is the life to strive toward. Consequently, if we are mindful of this key and habitually striving toward it, we will certainly fall much less often, right? – by the power of the Holy Spirit! We get to know Him here and get a rich welcome into heaven. Oh, how wonderful are the very great and precious promises that we have in Christ!
Thank You so much, Lord, for Your beautiful Word and the wonderful promises that You have given us!
