Love One Another?

How Can We Love One Another?

In this busy world, we tend to be stretched about as far as we can stretch. We have so many different plates spinning with careers, childrearing, church life, little league and so on and so on and so on. The thought of adding one more single thing to this crazy life pushes us toward the edge. So how can we love one another?

John 13:34-35 ESV

34“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

People are Needy

Life seems to be easier if we just go along focused on stuff and not on the people around us. People are needy. If you give them a chance the people around you will ask something of you! Nobody has time for that kind of distraction. Right?

Well… umm.

Needy People

I have actually been one of those needy people at a few different times in my life. If my sweet neighbor, Beth, had not loved us, I’m not sure how my kids would have gotten to school after my breast cancer surgery back in 2003. And if many, many people had not brought food for my family, I am not sure what we would have eaten. AND, if family and friends who loved us had not come to sit with me (still in bed and on heavy medication) and my kids, my husband would have had to drop out of Bible college for the semester. God is so good.

Hundreds of Cards

During this time, I received literally hundreds of cards. I had people in our church, who I hardly knew, who sent me a card every single week for months. My sister’s friend from her church sent me a  beautiful card and a gift. I had never even met her. One thing was for sure, these people were acting out this New Commandment. It was incredible and God is so good!

God Loves Through Us

What this showed me was not just that these people loved me but that God loved me. He is the one who reminded them to encourage me the day they wrote those cards and notes and sent them. None of these people knew what my day would be like or how many appointments I would have that week but they sent those cards and they arrived when needed.

Let’s look at Verse 34:

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

Sacrificial Love

As we discussed a couple of days ago, in John 15:9, Jesus tells us that He loves us like the Father loves Him! That is huge sacrificial love! And He tells us to love each other like He loves us!

Just a Note

What I have seen in my needy times is that a simple note means so much! You can pick up note cards 8ct/$1 next time you are at a dollar store. It takes 5 minutes or less to write: just a simple “You are on my mind and I am praying for you,” (if you don’t know what to say) and around $.50 to mail. Most of us can just drop it in with the outgoing mail at work. So it could not be much easier to show love to someone.

Being on the receiving end of this kind of outpouring of love has made a huge difference in my most difficult times and it has re-instilled in my mind the fact that God loves me.

Go Bigger

Sometimes we need to go bigger. Ask God what He wants you to do.

Maybe you need to begin a friendship with someone. Maybe you need to renew a friendship.

I know you are good at something… even gifted at it. God has gifted us for His glory. We can use these gifts to love each other. So that means it can be something you enjoy too!! Cooking… cleaning… errands… lawn mowing… a financial gift…    We can get creative with it.

What happens then? The recipient is blessed, we are blessed and God is glorified!

Now to Verse 35:

“By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

One of the things that makes the Body of Christ the Body of Christ is that we love our brothers and sisters in Christ actively. When we are truly loving each other in Christ the people who are watching from the outside will notice. We don’t even have to try to make them notice. They just notice. And God is glorified!

God is so good! Any goodness in us… He put there. Any love in us… He put there. Let’s go out love our brothers and sisters in Christ today and to God be the glory.

Things to Ponder:

  • Who do you know, right now, who needs a loving touch from you in Jesus name?
  • Commandments aren’t optional, are they??
  • As much love as has richly been poured out on us by our Loving God, how can we withhold that from each other?
