What is humility? And how do we do/be it??
Last time, we talked about not thinking more of ourselves and our own interests that we do of others. We will carry that idea farther today as we study on in Philippians 2.
Philippians 2:5-8 ESV
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
So as we have already touched on, we are to see the value in other people and not put ourselves in a higher place in our minds. One of the ways I find to effectively keep this in mind is to remember that without Jesus, we are all lost and bound for hell. We all need Him to save us and bring us back to God.
Let’s look at Verse 5:
“Have this mind among you, that is yours in Christ Jesus…”
So because we are in Christ Jesus as believers – we should all be of one mind – thinking about things the same way… the way Christ thinks about them.
We should be putting everything through the filter of belonging to Jesus and having a new mind in Christ. As we seek Him and get to know Him better we will be able to think more like Him.
Now Verse 6:
“…who, though He was in the form of God did not count equality with God, as a thing to be grasped…
Jesus was not worried about proving Himself to the people. He was only concerned about doing the will of the Father God.
“…but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
He left all the glory, worship and awe that He had in heaven and came down here to earth. He looked just like other people. You know, He did not have that glow around His head that we see on Christmas Cards, right? He just looked like a regular man but He had a hard message to deliver and brutal work to do.
He was a Mighty King who became a lowly servant.
“And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
He made Himself a servant to us – He served us by stepping into our shoes and doing what we were supposed to do – were even required to do. The only reason He was able to do this was that He was completely perfect and sinless and God allowed Him to do what we were supposed to do – die for our sins. God Himself – He humbled Himself and willingly died for us so that we could be forgiven for all the sins we had committed and would commit in the future. He stepped into the places of attorneys… doctors… custodians… teachers… prostitutes… homemakers… factory workers… homeless people…
And He did not die the death of a righteous man, He died the most humiliating death of that time – a criminal’s death – death by crucifixion on a cross.
This is our example of humility.
Why? Because God loved the world so much, that He gave His Son to be God and man so that we could be saved, be His, and then be His witnesses!
Grateful Hearts, Indeed!
So grateful because we are saved and free of sin and the punishment of eternal death, that we are His witnesses throughout the world!! Grateful hearts, indeed!!
Not that humility is easy – but it is so real and in my face how much I need a Savior! It is so real and in my face that you need a Savior! It is so real and in my face that every single person you and I encounter needs a Savior!
We are all in the same desperate place!! Some of us already know Him. Some of us still need to. My desperation helps me see what a waste it is to be anything but humble.
A Reason to Rejoice!
What a great way to start the day, huh? The best thing that could ever happen to us, to be saved in our absolute helpless desperation and to now be children of the King! Adopted into this amazing abundant life that Jesus Christ has given us by humbling Himself and becoming a servant. I rejoice that now I get to serve Him!! What a wonderful reason to rejoice on this and every day!! Right??
Thank You, Lord, that You love us so much that You saved us out of our complete desperation. If anyone reading this today does not yet know You as Lord and Savior, please bring them to You today. Thank You for Your beautiful Word. Help us to apply it to our lives. Please make us what You want us to be and help us to glorify You in all we do. In the glorious name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
