A Reason to Get Up
Why do you get out of bed in the mornings? To let the cat out? To get kids ready for school? To get you ready for work?
Years ago, before my relationship with God became real and serious, I remember waking up alone one morning. David had already gone to work and I was off work for a holiday. I laid there thinking that I did not have a single reason to get out of bed that day. My conclusion from that train of thought was that my life had no purpose. I was aimlessly adrift.
John 15:7-9 ESV
7“If you abide in Me, and My Words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and prove to be my disciples. 9As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you. Abide in My love.
The day I woke up and realized that I was adrift, I also realized that I needed something to change. I was looking for something more fulfilling – not necessarily in my work but in my life.
David and I were newlyweds and I was attempting to draw wholeness and satisfaction from being his wife, but anyone who has been married long knows that does not work. That is not why God created marriage.
I Needed God
Sometime after that, God brought me to a place of knowing that what needed to change was my relationship with Him. I needed one. I needed to abide in Him, then I would have a purpose for my life.
Let’s go to Verse 7:
7“If you abide in Me, and My Words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
Passages like this one get twisted, abused and misunderstood. So, let us be faithful to handle God’s Word carefully and correctly. (2 Timothy 2:15)
In His Will
If we are abiding in Him, and His Words are abiding in us – then we will be in line with His will. We cannot be abiding in Him and all about ourselves and our own personal agendas. So… as we abide in Him and His Words abide in us – we can “ask whatever we wish” and it will be in line with God’s will so we can be confident that He will do whatever it is.
We can always confidently pray just asking Him to be glorified and that His perfect will go forth. After all, He knows exactly what needs to happen. But, if you feel He is leading you to ask for something, ask for it. We sure grow in our faith when we see Him answer our prayers, don’t we?
This verse gets abused because people grab that one phrase and think of God as a big shiny Santa Claus of a genie that they make wishes to and just get what they want because “it says right there” that we can.
Now onto Verse 8:
“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples.”
Once, when I was at a ladies’ conference, I met another lady and we became instant friends. On day 2 of the conference, she could not find her journal which she was taking notes in. She had looked everywhere so during a break she and I both went to find the journal. We stopped in the hallway and prayed that God would help us find it. Then we went into her room and she moved one thing and there it was. This sounds like a simple thing but to Liz and to me, it was huge. God heard us and we were probably aglow walking back into that meeting.
He is so good.
“As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you. Abide in My love.”
The Father’s Love
We know that the Father has an unfathomable love for Jesus, right? Almighty Father God, in all His greatness – imagine the depth at which He would love His only Son. It is difficult for me to grasp that kind of love. I think about how much I love my kids and it overwhelms me. So how much more can this Infinite God’s love be for His dear Son!
The Son’s Love
But here, Jesus is saying that He loves us, His children, like that! Jesus, Son of God – God Himself, loves us with the same kind of love that the Father has for Him!! Can you even imagine! We are so purely and richly loved! You are so purely and richly loved!!
Living in His Love
And then Jesus tells us to “Abide in His love”. He wants us to live in His love day in and day out. There is never a day that goes by that He doesn’t love us at this level! He says so.
Think about that!
Safe, Warm and Loved
I don’t know about you but I really like the chenille blankets and throws that are so popular now. They are so luxuriously soft and so cozy warm. I pretty much live in mine as much as possible all Maine winter!
I picture abiding in Jesus love as if I am crawling up on His lap like little kid. He wraps His arms around me and I am safe, and warm, and accepted, and forgiven, and wrapped in the softness and comfort of His love.
Here’s the Reason
Abiding in His love is a place where we know we are loved and we can love others with His love and help them to see Him in all His goodness in our lives. This is life with purpose – a reason to get up in the morning – no matter what your life looks like.
Things to Ponder:
- What is your reason for getting up? How does it line up with God’s will?
- Can you wrap your mind around how much you are loved by Jesus? Think about it in comparison to the Father’s love for Him.
- What do you do with this information? Does knowing you are loved like this, make you want to share that amazing knowledge with others?
