Escape to Egypt

One More Day

Today, we are continuing in Matthew 2 for at least one more entry. It is such an impactful passage.

Matthew 2:13-15 ESV

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the Child, to destroy Him.” And he rose and took the Child and His mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Another Dream for Joseph

Joseph was probably becoming accustomed to the visits of angels by this point. Nah!

I cannot imagine how I would react to being visited by an angel in a dream with a message or instruction from God Himself. I hope that I would have the good sense to not blow it off as vain imaginings.

Joseph’s obedience was paramount at this point. Herod was coming for Jesus and it was only a matter of time.

I pray that when God speaks to my heart by whatever means He chooses, that I will immediately obey as Joseph did. God is always doing things around us, even if we do not notice. He is always at work in hearts and lives. That includes mine and yours!

Another Prophecy

Once more, God was fulfilling a prophecy from the Old Testament in sending this young family to Egypt. Here again, as we look at Scripture it all makes sense but can you imagine knowing only the Old Testament and trying to figure out what God meant by saying that the Christ child would be born in Bethlehem AND that He would be a Nazarene AND that He would call Him out of Egypt?

Clearly, God knows what He is doing even when we do not! We do not have to know, do we? It is a good thing!!

Obedience

I am impressed with Joseph’s obedience through the whole of the account from the time the angel visited Mary until this point when he is getting them up in the middle of the night to protect this (approximately) 2 year old little boy who was in reality, God incarnate.

Joseph did not stop to tell friends and family they were leaving the country and apparently, they traveled lightly. It takes me months to get ready to move. I want all my stories (attached to possessions) to go with me and I would have a very hard time leaving the country for an indefinite period of time without telling everyone goodbye.

Things to Ponder:

  • Isn’t it amazing how our great God had and has everything planned out even in the minute details?
  • How would you react if an angel appeared to you in a dream and told you to immediately do something this drastic?
  • My prayer for us all is that we will trust God and be obedient when He tells us to do something. We are His, first and foremost, and He deserves our absolute obedience, doesn’t He? You pray for me and I am praying for you right now.
