Doing Life

When I have a bad day, does it show on my face? Does my husband know it when I close my car door? Is how I am doing life consistent with what I believe? with who I belong to? with who I am?

How about you?

When I am facing the tough stuff, is it obvious in my manner that I belong to Christ or am I running in circles with my hair on fire?

How about you?

Today’s Passage

The persecution of the early church was definitely in full swing at this point in history. That is why Paul was in jail.

In our last couple of entries, we have been talking about Paul’s situation and whether or not he would indeed get back to see the Philippian church members again or not. We were also talking about how these things detailed out, can readily apply to our lives. Here again, in today’s post, we can see how God can use these things in our lives.

Philippians 1:27

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel…”

It is so easy for you, and me, to let our circumstances get us down. It is easy to just look around at the things that are hard and terrible, and just let them overwhelm us. A death, a scary diagnosis, an unexpected expense, an argument with a friend… Big things… Little things… they add up.

So Paul says to dig a hole, jump in and pull the hole in on top of you… right? I do not think so!!

I tell you the truth, my friend, this passage is for me today if for no one else at all!

Let’s get started in Verse 27:

“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ…”

It is like I have never read this before!!!

Who are you? Who am I? We belong to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He is the maker of the universe! His hands are not bound by our little problems. As huge as our problems are to us they really are small to Him. Not that He is hardened to them for He has compassion on us as we go through them. But, His solving our problems is not at all hard for Him.

I, for one, need to remember to walk in a manner fitting the daughter of the King. I do not need to curl up on my couch and succumb to a pity party! I need to let my “manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ”!

The Best News Ever

No matter what is going on, God is still God; Jesus Christ, Son of God, in His great grace still died for our sins, conquered death, saved us, and is sitting in heaven at the right of the Father!! That is literally the best news anyone is ever going to hear!

That is the gospel of Christ so no matter what – there is always reason to have peace and that residing joy that God put in us when He saved us. He is still God!!

Back to Verse 27:

“…so that whether I come to see you or am absent…”

So if Paul’s plan does not line up with God’s plan…

“…I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side, for the faith of the gospel…”

Paul writes this to the church body, not to an individual. He does not say stand firm – be an island. He is saying come together with believers, pull together, strive together. Live out your faith in Jesus Christ by sharing it with others and encouraging each other in the church family.

So many places in the Bible, we are told to come together with other believers to encourage and be encouraged. Generally, according to Scripture, God wants us to be pulling together and encouraging each other all the time.

Divide and Conquer

A well-known and well-practiced battle strategy is: Divide and Conquer – “get them apart and they will be weaker. Get them fighting with each other and the battle is all but yours.”

A Different Strategy

  • Seek out believers who will counsel you with God’s Word.
  • Seek out believers who will pray with you and for you.
  • Seek out believers who will help you dig into God’s Word for His Truth to stand on.
  • Seek God, Himself. This is a huge opportunity for you to grow in your relationship with Him.
  • Resist the urge not to go to church.
  • Resist the urge to hold up in your house and pull the afghan over your head.
  • Resist the urge to keep what is going on to yourself.

Let’s Pray:

Lord, I thank You for Your powerful Word! I thank You that You want us to know You and Your Word and live our lives out strong in You. Please make us what You want us to be and help us to glorify You in all we do. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
