Do I Trust You?

Christian Living

These verses are part of the Sermon on the Mount, which is an actual sermon preached by Jesus Himself during His earthly ministry. It is a lengthy sermon. In it, Jesus taught us how to live the Christian life. When we are truly living the Christian life it comes from our hearts. Following Christ is not a list of Do’s and Don’ts but a life lived out in love for Him. We are going to be looking specifically at verse 33 today and next time we will look at verse 34.

Matthew 6:33&34 (NIV)

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Trust Issues

I have trust issues. Do you? I often struggle with trusting God that His best is best even if it hurts. This is founded in my belief that I can wrap my tiny little human brain around what God is thinking with His all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present God-sized brain. When I put it that way it sounds just as ridiculous as it is.

He is God of the Universe. He made it all and sustains it all. God keeps my heart beating for goodness sake. I know that God’s will is best and I want His will to go forth but I have difficulty because I do not know all the details of the plan. That is the control freak in me.

This passage completely addresses the fact that our physical needs are being met by God.

Let’s go to the Verse:

“But…”

That word but is not just hanging out there to be pretty, is it? To fully understand it, go back and read verses 25-32. Verse 25 does begin with ‘therefore’ so you may as well include verse 24 too. Trust me it is worth it!! Really, it is!!

“…seek first…”

This is the place we must start! Before we seek wealth, power, or possessions we must seek:

“…His kingdom…”

We must seek to know Him and His ways. We must learn to be of His kingdom – to be like Him.

“…and His righteousness…”

Truly, Christ wraps us completely in His righteousness when we become His children and He becomes our Savior and Lord. As believers, we are righteous because we are in Him. However, we must seek to live righteous lives as Jesus explains all through the Sermon on the Mount. We want to glorify Him with our lives. This will be most effectively done through righteous living. We must desire and seek to have His righteousness and our gratitude seen in our lives daily.

“…and all these things…”

We tend to fixate or focus on the things we need or think we need. If we are not careful we can let the things we “need” get between us and God. We are easily distracted by “STUFF”, especially in the USA. Of course, there are exceptions, but this is definitely a very materialistic society. Few of us have true physical needs. We may not have what we want to eat, but we are not starving. You may not have all the clothes you want but you have clothes.

“…shall be added to you.”

Focus of Life

This verse plainly says that if we will seek Him and seek to live righteous lives, He will take care of our physical needs. (Psalm 37:25)

God wants us to focus our lives on Him, not on what we need. As we do this, He is glorified and that is why we are here. We are here for His glory.

What is My Business?

I have told you guys just a little about my childhood, I think. For about 5 years, my mom and dad were divorced and then they reconciled. While Mom was doing the single mom thing, there was a point when she had just graduated from tech and had 2 job opportunities and she was really struggling with which one she should take. Mom was praying hard for wisdom.

At one point, she just knew that God was saying in her heart, “You take care of My business and I will take care of your business.” She felt He was giving her the choice so she accepted one of the positions. It was a terrible job BUT within a few weeks, she was offered a great job – a “dream job” quality job. She had no qualms about taking it. At that point, Mom knew that God had provided the terrible job to make ends meet until the right job came along. After all, that position had not been available when she was deciding between the other two.

His Business

It is my business to take care of His business and His business is His glory.

Me seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness >>> His Kingdom is His Business

All these things will be added to you >>> That is “my” business.

Do you know what is really cool? It is all His Business because He is in control. We only have to seek Him and be obedient and He will take care of the rest. He is so good to us.

Don’t you just love Him!?!?!

Let’s Pray:

Oh Gracious Lord, I am just overwhelmed with Your rich goodness and Your beautiful peace. I thank You that You are in control and that You love us. Thank You for giving us Your beautiful rich salvation. Each morning You give us brand new mercy and it never runs out. Thank You so much! Please be with each one reading this. Help us all to walk closely with You. Help us to have the strength and courage to be about Your business in all areas of our lives. Please encourage each one today. Help each one of us to never let this fact, that You are right with us, slip our minds. Help us live our lives focused on You. In Jesus beautiful name, I pray. Amen.
