Deeper and Richer
Again today, we are in this beautiful, nourishing passage. This is actually the second part of what I posted yesterday, and today we are going to see that it gets deeper and richer as we go. That being said, I encourage you to stay with me until the end of this article and take special care in reading the scripture passage because it will be easy to skim. Though it seems repetitive, it is not. Dig in and get to the deeper richer meaning of what God has for you here! It is really for you!!
2 Peter 1:5-7
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
Indeed, this is the divine nature in action and this is what that looks like:
Let’s go to the verses:
“For this very reason, make every effort… “
Back in verse 4, we see what the “reason” is – “so that through them(very great and precious promises) you may participate in the divine nature.”
So, as we consider this divine nature we are invited to participate in, we also see that it is necessary that we make every effort. Again, we need to really think about this and not just skim over it. This is saying in three words that all we do to should strive…
“…to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness(mutual affection), love.”
Let’s define these quickly:
- faith-reliance on Christ for salvation, believing in Him and the work of salvation on the cross and that He will be faithful to who He says He is in His Word.
- goodness – moral excellence, valor, virtue
- knowledge – the act of knowing
- self-control – temperance, behaving according to God’s Word and all that entails
- perseverance – cheerful or hopeful endurance
- godliness – holiness, being like God in character
- brotherly kindness – love of other Christians (brothers and sisters in Christ)
- love – real love, the way God loves, consistent and unconditional
But How Do We Do This??
All this being said, as we make every effort to add these things to our lives, we must keep in mind that we cannot do it apart from God. His Holy Spirit empowers us to be like Him as we know Christ better and our relationship with Him gets deeper. In fact, as we seek the Lord with all our hearts the Holy Spirit adds these qualities to our lives. (Matthew 6:33, Jeremiah 29:12-14) That is a precious promise indeed!
Think About This Today
Now, does this list of qualities sound similar to another list of qualities in God’s Word? Paul wrote a list of qualities(Galatians 5:22-23) in his letter to the Galatian church. He called his list the Fruit of the Spirit. Peter’s list here is also fruit of the Spirit. Neither list is actually exhaustive so not exactly the same. Without the Holy Spirit’s help, we bear no fruit at all. But with Him, we can bear plentifully!
So, not repetitive at all is it? Just rich and full showing us the beautiful way God pulls us toward Him and makes us more like His dear Son – gradually and lovingly.
