Decompression is Necessary
How do you deal with the daily stresses of life? Do the things you need to do and be overwhelm you? They often do overwhelm me. We pack so much into life and compress it down until we are on the verge of cracking – or should I say cracking up?! Decompression is necessary!
How can we decompress?
I am just like you, and most of the time, the things I share here come out of what is going on in my life and in my mind. Life can get crazy and out of control so fast, can’t it?
I believe there are some hugely valid keys to decompression in Philippians 4:4-7. This is another passage that is easy to read through quickly but we must slow down and think about it to get the “meat” out of it.
Philippians 4:4-7 ESV
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Such Rich Text
These verses just really sound good, don’t they? I love this passage. However, it not only sounds good. There is so much richness in these verses. I am so excited for us to think about and talk about them over the next few days.
What do you need to Decompress?
When you are stressed out, what do you need most to decompress?
We could say rest but rest is often interrupted or inhibited by stress, isn’t it?
How about distraction? Well, it might give a tiny respite but the stress is right there waiting for us when we return.
Peace and quiet?
The Peace of God
I believe that what we need to decompress is peace, but I am not talking about peace and quiet, as nice as that is. The peace I am talking about only comes from God. It is the long-lasting peace that goes back into stressful situations with us and helps us to be able to think through them and deal with them more effectively.
The Plan for Decompression:
The truths in this passage layer, one on the other, to bring us to this culmination – the peace of God. Then we can really rest and decompress in Him.
- Foundational Layer: Hold onto the joy that you can only get from a relationship with God through salvation in Christ.
- Layer 2: Be reasonable in your dealings with others because you have a reason to rejoice!
- Layer 3: The Lord is near so do not be anxious.
- Layer 4: Prayer with needs and gratitude included in them.
- The Final Layer and Result: God’s peace which surpasses understanding, guarding our hearts.
Everything lays on the Foundation of the Joy of Salvation.
Meet me here next time and we are going to dig into this Plan for Decompression.
Lord, I thank You that You give us purpose in our lives. I also thank You, Lord, that because that purpose is sometimes a lot of responsibility, You also give us Your peace to help us through times of pressure and stress. Help us to get what You have for us out of this beautiful passage and apply it in our lives. Please, help us to be about Your business, whether that is chasing around a 2-year-old, homeschooling four children or leading a multi-faceted ministry. Give us the strength and wisdom to do what You want us to do on a daily basis. Also, please give us Your peace. May it be the banner we serve under. Be glorified in us all today and help us to be what You want us to be. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
